Vivaldi: 12 Concertos, Op. 7

Read more Composer: Antonio Vivaldi Artists: Pier Luigi Fabretti (oboe), Federico Guglielmo (concert master), L'Arte dell'Arco Tracklist below. Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/VivaldiOp7 More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/v/vivaldi-12-concertos-op7/ Brilliant Classics Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/user/brilliantclassics?si=HgGb_J0xS-avoQapy7XSHQ Brilliant Classics Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brilliantclassics After the enormous success of Vivaldi’s earlier collections La Stravaganza and L’Estro Armonico, his publisher Estienne Roger was eager to capitalise on the composer’s soaring popularity. With that in mind, Op.7 was published in 1720 containing 12 new concertos, ten for solo violin and two for solo oboe. However, it seems unlikely Vivaldi either authorised or approved of this publication, and recent research has even discovered that the authenticity of the concertos is doubtful, with at least the two oboe concertos certainly not by Vivaldi. The concertos may not bear the traditional Vivaldian hallmarks, with movements simplified or moved around, but they are still a worthy tribute to the composer, whether penned by the ‘Prete Rosso’ himself or not. Federico Guglielmo leads his experienced and lively ensemble L’Arte dell’Arco from the front. A highly acclaimed soloist, Guglielmo has been an active performer on the early music circle for many years, having played alongside such groups as the Academy of Ancient Music and the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston. This time he is joined by oboist Pier Luigi Fabretti, who has previously performed with Concerto Köln and I Barocchisti, among others. his new instalment of the complete recording of Vivaldi’s Op. 112 contains the 12 Violin Concertos Op. 7, published in Amsterdam in 1720. Prompted by the popular success of the previously published La Stravaganza and L’Estro Armonico Vivaldi wrote these concertos in the same vein: brilliant, dramatic, full of the vitality of Mediterranean life and colours. Played by the Italian Early Music group “L’Arte dell’Arco, led by violinist (and soloist) Federico Guglielmo. French magazine Diapason wrote about them: ”they understand the secret language of Vivaldi…rich and generous instrumental textures envelop the expressive lines of the solo violin…” 00:00:00 Violin Concerto in D Major, RV 208a: I. Vivaldi: Violin Concertos (Op. 11 & 12)

Read more Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play and more): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/VivaldiOP1112 Physical purchase: http://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/v/vivaldi-violin-concertos-opp-11-12/ Artist: L'Arte dell'Arco , Federico Guglielmo (solo violin & concertmaster ), Pier Luigi Fabretti (oboe) With this new release, L’Arte dell’Arco complete their survey of the concertos and sonatas Opp. 1-12 which spread the fame of Antonio Vivaldi across Europe thanks to their publication by Etienne Roger in Amsterdam. These final two sets were published in 1729, 18 years after the L’estro armonico collection Op.2 had created a sensation with their unprecedented brilliance of solo writing, rhythmic vivacity and originality of disposition between solo and accompaniment. Federico Guglielmo contributes a scholarly note to the booklet, in which study of the manuscripts have uncovered new contexts to these concertos. Although it is uncertain how much Vivaldi supervised their publication, and to what degree they are compilations of earlier work, the concertos bear the hallmarks of the fully mature composer. By this time in his full maturity, Vivaldi was highly receptive to the appeal of the new galant taste, enriched by his experience with opera, and sensitive to discussion with acclaimed composers such as Leonardo Vinci, Nicola Porpora and Leonardo Leo. Two of them were likely written for one Anna Maria, a student of particular virtuoso abilities at the Ospedale della Pieta where Vivaldi was the long-serving music master. The final concerto of Op.11 was originally conceived as an oboe concerto, and in that form is presented here. 00:00:00 Violin Concerto No. 5 in C Minor, RV 202: I. John Williams & Vienna Philharmonic – Williams: Imperial March (from “Star Wars”)

Read more John Williams & Vienna Philharmonic – Williams: Imperial March (from “Star Wars”) Discover “John Williams in Vienna”: http://dg.lnk.to/Williams John Williams’ movie soundtracks are among the best-loved of all time. Before a single note had been played at the Hollywood legend’s debut concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, Maestro Williams received a standing ovation. Their sensational performance of the “Imperial March” from “Star Wars” underlined the rapport and affection between orchestra and composer. “It was honestly one of the best presentations of that March I’ve ever heard”, Williams reflected afterwards. “They played it as though they owned it.” Deutsche Grammophon releases Williams’ historic Vienna Philharmonic debut concert in audio and video formats on August 14, 2020. “From Star Wars to Harry Potter – John Williams conducts Vienna Philharmonic” will be broadcast on ServusTV in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on Whit Monday, June 1, 2020 at 10 am and 10.15 pm CET. Beethoven: Piano Trio in D major, “Ghost” - Harriet Krijgh & Friends - Live HD

Among two other brilliant pieces, they focused on Beethoven's wonderful 'Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1', nicknamed "Ghost". This nickname has probably been born out of a quote by Beethoven's pupil Carl Czerny. According to him, "The character of the very slow to perform Largo is spooky and eerie, like a vision of the underworld." 0:03 Allegro vivace e con brio 7:25 Largo assai ed espressivo 19:06 Presto Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1 “Ghost” Emmanuel Tjeknavorian [violin] Harriet Krijgh [cello] Magda Amara [piano] Ab Nieuwdorp [presenter] Recording: Wednesday the 27th of June 2018, during The Utrecht International Chamber Music Festival in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. Our CDs are available on iTunes, Google, Amazon, CD Baby and just about everywhere; you can also buy a CD in a jewel case from Kunaki: https://www.voicesofmusic.org/cds.html Q. What is Early Music performance, or historical performance? A. We play on instruments from the time of the composers, and we use the original music and playing techniques: it’s a special sound. Q. Why are there no conductors? A. Conductors weren’t invented until the 19th century; since we seek to recreate a historical performance, the music is led from the keyboard or violin, or the music is played as chamber music~or both :) Q. What are period instruments or original instruments; how are they different from modern instruments? A. As instruments became modernized in the 19th century, builders and players tended to focus on the volume of sound and the stability of tuning. Modern steel strings replaced the older materials, and instruments were often machine made. Historical instruments, built individually by hand and with overall lighter construction, have extremely complex overtones—which we find delightful. Modern instruments are of course perfectly suited to more modern music. Q. Why is the pitch lower, or higher? A. Early Music performance uses many different pitches, and these pitches create different tone colors on the instruments. See https://goo.gl/pVBNAC The concerto is surely one of the most complex, entrancing and beautiful of all of the concertos from the baroque period. We invite you to enjoy this timeless moment from the live performance at St. Mark's, San Francisco, performed on original instruments by Voices of Music. Corelli: Concerto in F Major Opus 6 No. 2; complete, Voices of Music 4K UHD, original instruments

Read more Hey everyone~! Please consider a donation, http://www.voicesofmusic.org/donate.html and we will make more videos like this one :) We need your help! The Concerto in F Major Op. 6 No. 2 by Arcangelo Corelli, complete. Performed on original instruments by the early music ensemble Voices of Music. 4K UHD video from the Steffani Stabat Mater concert, March 2015, San Francisco. 300 years ago, Corelli's concertos, Op. 6, were published in 1714 in Amsterdam: these works dramatically affected the style of the baroque concerto for the next generation of composers. The reception of this magnificent collection, one of the crown jewels of baroque instrumental music, was in no small part due to the music publishing boom which began around 1690, as well as Corelli's signature set of violin sonatas, Opus 5, of which as Michael Talbot notes "at least 42 editions had appeared by 1800". The wide availability of Corelli's works created an international Corellian style. The concertos are written in an expanded trio sonata form, in which the two solo violins and continuo provide the core ensemble within the larger tutti framework. Corelli composed his concerto in F Major without the usual three or four sections, but twelve sections (many of which are asymmetrical); two of these twelve are simply cadence markers consisting of one or two bars, the the remaining twelve movements are numbered in the video. The work begins with an upbeat flourish which then serves as anchor points for the following imitative sections. The wistful adagios provide an excellent foil to the persistent rhythms of the allegros. CD now available! https://goo.gl/24jFWq 4K video from the Gala Concert at the Göttingen International Handel Festival. The Göttingen Handel Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious festivals in Europe. Every year, musicians from around the world celebrate the music of Handel and his contemporaries with performances of operas, oratorios and many other concerts. Vist the Handel Festival on the web at: https://www.haendel-festspiele.de Keep track of their activities year 'round on Facebook: https://goo.gl/X7KcJe Handel's Water Music has traditionally been divided into three suites; however, recent research has shown that it is most likely one continuous work: this video is taken directly from the performance of the new edition and presented here for the first time in 4K, ultra high definition video. No autograph timpani parts survive for the Water Music, but advertisements for performances in Drury Lane and Lincoln's Inn Fields feature them prominently: "After the play, Mr Handel's Water-Musick, in which Mr Benj Baker will beat the kettle-drums, accompanied by trumpets and French horns." For this recording, Maarten van der Valk performs his reconstruction of the timpani parts. #Handel #Hornpipe

Early Music performance uses many different pitches, and these pitches create different tone colors on the instruments. The last sonata, which is a highly virtuosic set of variations on the "La Follia" dance pattern (titled only "Follia" in the print), is one of his most famous works; Vivaldi takes Corelli's variations on the same theme-and-bass pattern from Corelli's Opus 5 (1700), which was already a famous work, and adds figuration of even greater complexity. It was published by Probst as Op. 100 in late 1828, shortly before the composer's death and first performed at a private party in January 1828 to celebrate the engagement of Schubert's school-friend Josef von Spaun. The Trio was among the few of his late compositions Schubert heard performed before his death. It was given its first private performance by Carl Maria von Bocklet on the fortepiano, Ignaz Schuppanzigh playing the violin, and Josef Linke playing violoncello. #Schubert #BarryLyndon

A. Marcello - Oboe Concerto in d minor (Marcel Ponseele, baroque oboe / Il Gardellino)

Presto - 07:09 Marcel Ponseele (Baroque Oboe) Ensemble Il Gardellino Marcel Ponseele (conductor) A slightly older contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi, Marcello held concerts at his hometown of Venice. He composed and published several sets of concertos, including six concertos under the title of La Cetra (The Lyre), as well as cantatas, arias, canzonets, and violin sonatas. Marcello often composed under the pseudonym Eterio Stinfalico, his name as a member of the celebrated Arcadian Academy (Pontificia Accademia degli Arcadi). He died in Padua in 1747. Alessandro's brother was Benedetto Marcello (1686~1739), also a composer. Although his works are infrequently performed today, Marcello is regarded as a very competent composer. His La Cetra concertos are "unusual for their wind solo parts, concision and use of counterpoint within a broadly Vivaldian style," according to Grove, "placing them as a last outpost of the classic Venetian Baroque concerto." A concerto Marcello wrote in d minor for oboe, strings and basso continuo is perhaps his best-known work. Its worth was attested to by Johann Sebastian Bach who transcribed it for harpsichord (BWV 974). A number of editions have been published of the famous Oboe Concerto in d minor. The edition in c minor is credited to Benedetto Marcello.

Bach transformed the musical language at the end of the Baroque, and as part of this process he also elevated the role of the cello, so that as a solo instrument it became the equal of the keyboard, violin and flute. This new balance is represented by the presentation of Bach’s concertos in multiple forms: the solo parts for the cello concertos were also arranged for harpsichord and flute. Although it is tempting to speculate that the cello versions were composed first, or specifically with the cello in mind, it is also quite possible that Carl Philipp could, first of all, handle the composition of three versions simultaneously, and, second, that he, like his father, was accomplished on a variety of instruments but was primarily a keyboard player. Nonetheless, the rich textures and compelling virtuosity of the concertos for cello make a persuasive case that the Carl Philipp--who occasionally cut a few compositional corners for lesser commissions--invested his best efforts in these concertos, which show a composer willing and able to emerge from the shadow of his extraordinary father, J.S. Bach. Performing parts based on the critical edition Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: The Complete Works (http://www.cpebach.org) were graciously made available by the publisher, the Packard Humanities Institute of Los Altos, California. See https://goo.gl/pVBNAC 300 years ago, Corelli's concertos, Op. 6, were published in 1714 in Amsterdam: these works dramatically affected the style of the baroque concerto for the next generation of composers. The reception of this magnificent collection, one of the crown jewels of baroque instrumental music, is in no small part due to the music publishing boom which began around 1690, as well as Corelli's signature set of violin sonatas, Opus 5, of which as Michael Talbot notes "at least 42 editions had appeared by 1800". The wide availability of Corelli's works created an international Corellian style. The concertos are written in an expanded trio sonata style, in which the two solo violins and cello form a small ensemble within the larger tutti framework. The fourth concerto is noteworthy for its suave and serene introduction, the gracefulness of the dance movement, the exceptionally well-balanced counterpoint and harmony, and the furious concluding coda which flows out of the second ending of the last movement. In the year 1702, the Avvisi di Roma noted that for a performance during Holy Week of Scarlatti's Lamentations, the orchestra also played "a superb concerto for basses, violones, violins and violas of Arcangelo" (Griffin, The Late Baroque Serenata). Bach - Cello Suite No. 2 in D Minor BWV 1008, complete; Eva Lymenstull | Voices of Music 4K

Read more The Suite in D Minor, complete, performed on an original baroque cello by Eva Lymenstull. Eva is the winner of the 2017 Voices of Music International Bach Competition. Prelude 0:00 Allemande 4:00 Courante 7:17 Sarabande 9:21 Menuet 13:30 Gigue 16:54 Ms. Lymenstull plays an original, anonymous English cello ca. 1730, restored by Guust Francois in Amsterdam. Baroque bow by Kees van Hemert, the Hague, the Netherlands. In his cello suites, Bach creates the perfect blend of five musical senses: individual expression, technique, counterpoint, rhythm and harmony; the music has been endlessly adapted and arranged, and every cellist studies these compositions at different points in their lives. Much has been written about the suites, yet little is known. It seems likely that the music was composed by Bach in his usual grouping of a set of six around the year 1720, when Bach was Kapellmeister at Köthen. The date is really just a guess, based partly on the style of the music as well as the fact that we *do* have a date—1720—for the autograph copy of the violin sonatas. We are fortunate indeed to have the copy of the music written down by Bach’s wife, Anna Magdalena, as well as an autograph version of one of the suites in an arrangement for lute in Bach’s own handwriting. According to legend, the suites were unknown until the cellist Pablo Casals discovered them in a thrift store in Barcelona at the age of thirteen; the legend does not explain how the music could be completely unknown even if it was readily available in several printed editions. As is the case with the Brandenburg concertos, highly embellished histories of many of Bach’s works appear in the 1930s coinciding with the marketing of recordings and concert tours; invariably, these stories take the form of a “rescue,” in which masterpieces are first overlooked and then saved from perpetual obscurity owing to an improbable series of events. Such stories have made good liner notes for decades: a more balanced view is that many of Bach’s works were continuously performed and studied after the composer’s death; for example, the Well Tempered Clavier influenced generations of composers. The performance history and transmission of manuscripts for the cello suites begins with one of Bach’s favorite students, the composer and organist Johann Christian Kittel; Kittel was devoted to Bach’s musical style and shared Bach’s works with his own students, including the virtuoso cellist and composer Johann Friedrich Dotzauer. The other major historical figure is one Johann Peter Kellner, who copied many of Bach’s works in the late 1720s. Anna Magdalena and Kellner provide the two contemporaneous sources for the suites that survive to the present day. Kittel’s student, Dotzauer, may have been working from one of these copies or a later copy when he began the study of the works, and by 1826 demand for the music of Bach as well as for works for the cello in general had grown to the point where the suites were published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1826. Even though Dotzauer could trace his musical style directly back to Bach, by the 1820s—one hundred years after Bach composed the suites—performers were more interested in adapting the music to the style and taste of the time as opposed to recreating a performance from the time of Bach, and Dotzauer’s influential version had the effect of obscuring the two primary sources of the music until the 1960s. Tracing the “thrift store” copy, we see that Dotzauer’s version was most likely passed down to his student, Karl Dreschler, and thence to Dreschler’s student, Friedrich Wilhelm Grützmacher who “edited” the copy found by Casals, bringing the suites into the 20th century complete with a turgid layer of markings, additional chords, and ornamentation reminiscent of the silent movie era. In addition to being an outstanding cellist, Grützmacher arranged and re-arranged a number of important historical works including Boccherini’s Cello Concerto in B flat Major: Grützmacher’s work fits the pattern in which composers throughout the 19th century adapted the works of Bach, Handel, Boccherini and many others for contemporaneous audiences, often adding their own musical material. The Bach cello suites became a permanent part of the Early Music revival in the 1960s when the Musical Heritage Society contracted Nikolaus Harnoncourt to record the set. A decade after Harnoncourt, players began to perform the suites using historical techniques in earnest, with notable recordings by Anner Bylsma and Sigiswald Kuijken. Voices of Music will film all six suites using our innovative 4K, ultra-high definition video process. The videos will be part of our digital library and will be free for anyone to view, anywhere in the world. —David Tayler #Bach #CelloSuites #BachCompetition

Also, big thanks to Paul Jacobson from Avatar Productions and Pierre Rueda for their video expertise. Hi guys! Sorry for the long wait since our last video. We've been busy recording tons of new stuff and we're excited to share it all with you very soon! Some of you know that we occasionally play for weddings. As you can imagine, we get a LOT of requests for Canon in D, and we've discovered that there are NO good arrangements available anywhere for piano and cello! Hard to believe given its popularity. So we decided to make our own! We tried to stick as closely to the original as possible (which was written for three violins and basso continuo), and we performed it NOT at a snail's pace so the bride can actually make it down the aisle without putting everyone to sleep. 🙊(Yeah, we said it! Nobody likes a slow processional!) Also, the number one complaint about this piece from cellists is always how booooring it is to play because they literally have to play the same 8 bass notes over and over for the entire piece. Problem solved with this arrangement because the cello NEVER has to play the bass! 🙌(The piano does, but we get lots of other fun stuff too so it's ok!) So for all you musicians out there playing weddings, we hope you enjoy playing this arrangement a little more than the ones you were used to...You can get it from www.musicnotes.com. 😊Be sure to let us know in the comments if you do! Through its creative arrangements and live video performances, the piano and cello duo has garnered a huge following, with over 800,000 YouTube subscribers, and over 150 million streams annually on platforms such as Spotify and Pandora Radio. In 2014, on a whim, the couple arranged and recorded two pop covers and released them on YouTube. Amazingly, Shakira noticed the duo’s cover and promoted it to her 130 million-plus fan base, saying: “We're loving Brooklyn Duo's piano/cello cover of Empire! Great work guys." The boost that resulted from that exposure and the positive response they were getting on YouTube encouraged the couple to continue creating videos. (Other notable shout-outs since then include ones from Taylor Swift, a-ha and Pearl Jam.) Today, Marnie and Patrick have released over 100 videos on their Brooklyn Duo YouTube channel and 9 albums of covers, spanning artists from The Beatles to Metallica to Ariana Grande. In 2016, the couple started a second YouTube channel, Brooklyn Classical, with the goal of introducing classical music to a larger audience through high quality, live performances. Brooklyn Classical often hosts high-profile guest artists, including the world-renowned Dover and Escher string quartets, percussionist Ivan Trevino and cellist Cicely Parnas. In 2017, Marnie and Patrick partnered with Carnegie Hall and Ensemble Connect to produce a cover of a-ha’s “Take On Me”. The video went viral and garnered millions of views in just a few months. Popular classical music stations Classic FM and WQXR regularly share Brooklyn Duo’s music on their social media pages, with Classic FM calling the duo “masters of the artfully planned pop cover.” Their music has also been featured on several television shows, including Grey's Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars. #brooklynduo

See https://goo.gl/pVBNAC Bach's concerto presents a composer who can balance a variety of interrelated themes while still maintaining the basic framework of the concerto form, fashioning traditional ritornellos and episodes with tightly-knit motives. The parallel development of the thematic material foreshadows elements of the Classical Sonata form which would be further developed by C.P.E. Bach and other composers. Hey everyone~! The sprightly concerto RV 443 for sopranino recorder (titled flautino—a little recorder) finds Vivaldi in a balanced frame of compositional mind: phrases are neatly turned, the slow movement is fluid and expressive, and the extraordinarily passagework is ever so slightly tempered by the harmonic and contrapuntal framework; that is, the technical demands rarely cross the lines of taste into the realm of pure display. A rubric on the manuscript reads “Gl’istromti trasportati alla 4a” (the instruments transposed a fourth) which has led some scholars to believe that the entire work should be played a fourth lower. As with many cryptic comments on manuscripts, more questions are inevitably raised than answered: if Vivaldi had desired a transposition, it would have been much more practical—and easier—to have written the recorder part in a transposing key and the string parts at sounding pitch. In addition, if the string parts are transposed down a fourth, the cello part goes below the range of the instrument, and the overall ambitus of the music lies in a muddy acoustical range. A musician of Vivaldi's time would have found the turgid discussions of transposition highly amusing and presumably would have said: "Why not play it in the key that sounds best with the instruments at hand?" As written, the concerto is bright, convincing and clear.

In March of 1721, Johann Sebastian Bach carefully inked six of his best concertos into a book for the Margrave of Brandenburg, Christian Ludwig. The original title, "Six Concerts à plusieurs instruments" is now known as the "Brandenburg" Concertos in English or "Brandenburgische Konzerte" in German. These six concertos represent the summa of chamber music in the high baroque period, and the third concerto (BWV 1048) is noted for its rich texture of three violins, three violas and three cellos, with a continuo part for the harpsichord and violone. The original title is as follows: "Concerto 3zo [terzo] a tre Violini, tre Viole, è tre Violoncelli col Basso per il Cembalo". On the continuo part, Bach has written "Violone & Cembalo", and this is how it is performed in the video, just as it is indicated in the original manuscript. This concerto is part of the Voices of Music Great Works project. A Creative Commons edition of the score, based on the composer's manuscript, will be published to accompany the complete recording, and the recording will be available worldwide on Blu-Ray and CD, and for free on MP3 and high-definition, 24 bit FLAC files. These six concertos represent the summa of chamber music in the high baroque period: for the fourth concerto (BWV 1049), Bach chose the unique and imaginative texture of baroque violin and “echo flutes” (a type of baroque recorder) for his soloists. In his autograph manuscript of Brandenburg 4 (BWV 1049), Bach writes the title as follows: "Concerto 4to à Violino Principale, due Fiauti d'Echo, due Violini, una Viola è Violone in Ripieno, Violoncello è Continuo." For our video, we use the “echo flutes” for the slow movement, then break them apart for the first and third movements. The outside movements feature exceptionally virtuosic writing for the violin, with extended passagework spanning the entire range of the instrument. For his fourth concerto in the set of Brandenburgs, Bach is especially careful with the orchestration: this creates space for the recorder sound to breathe; in addition, his compositional style flows with sparkle and wit. The fourth Brandenburg concerto is unusual in that Bach specifically calls for "echo flutes", or "fiauti d'echo". For many years musicologists have debated what an "echo flute" exactly is, and have also uncovered a great deal of historical detail, but the work is usually performed with two alto recorders. YouTube now has a limit on the length of the description text; more information about the echo flutes and this recording here: http://voicesofmusic.org/BB4Notes.pdf #Bach #BrandenburgConcerto
