Script : 0:02 in ukraine i've been getting one 0:04 question one question only in the 0:06 discord in the comment section and it's 0:09 pretty simple is it safe to use 0:11 kaspersky well we'll find out 0:15 this video is brought to you by nordvpn 0:18 alright so what exactly is going on here 0:21 it turns out germany has issued a 0:23 warning not really a ban but just a 0:26 warning saying that you should consider 0:28 switching away from kaspersky because of 0:30 concerns relating to russia now 0:33 kaspersky of course is headquartered in 0:36 russia but it is a multinational company 0:39 so it hasn't really been directly 0:41 affected by some of the sanctions that 0:43 have been issued as a company they're 0:45 registered in the uk 0:46 all of the data gets processed in 0:49 switzerland so what does kaspersky have 0:51 to do with russia anyway well it turns 0:53 out they have links to the russian state 0:55 intelligence and that's not a direct 0:57 link in the sense that the company is 1:00 owned by russia's government or russia's 1:02 state intelligence it's just that there 1:04 are individuals within kaspersky that 1:06 have worked in state intelligence so 1:09 there's that sort of a personal link now 1:12 does that link exist in other countries 1:14 like the us absolutely 1:16 if you're using a product like norton or 1:18 mcafee anything developed in the united 1:21 states 1:22 it probably has links to the nsa but the 1:24 concern of course here is that this is 1:26 not the united states this is not a 1:28 democratic country and russia is not 1:31 really a dependable actor 1:33 internationally because of that the 1:35 united states actually banned the use of 1:38 kaspersky products in their systems in 1:40 2019 and in response kaspersky had a 1:43 global transparency initiative this is 1:45 when they moved away from russia and 1:48 moved all of their data processing to 1:49 switzerland they also had independent 1:52 companies do a code review so their stat 1:55 so from a purely technical security 1:57 standpoint it's probably fine but the 2:00 issue here is 2:02 fsb the russian state intelligence or 2:04 previously the kgb 2:06 is not known to limit its power here's 2:09 the question what happens if somebody at 2:12 the fsb goes to a high ranking official 2:14 in kaspersky puts a gun to their head 2:16 and says hey you need to push this 2:18 update that's going to open a back door 2:20 for us or that's going to give us 2:22 control of these systems or that's going 2:24 to create a global botnet or use these 2:27 systems to gather certain kinds of 2:29 intelligence data 2:31 we don't know i i mean we are talking 2:33 about scenarios like the ones you see in 2:35 movies at this point so how realistic is 2:38 that probably very unrealistic i don't 2:41 think anything like that's ever going to 2:43 happen but it is a possibility because 2:45 after all this is the russian 2:47 intelligence we're talking about so any 2:49 kind of dystopian nightmare you can 2:51 imagine they've been there they've done 2:53 that and so the question becomes do we 2:55 want to rely entirely on a company that 2:58 could even if not willingly become a 3:01 victim of such a authoritarian 3:04 government 3:06 now kaspersky is somewhat insulated from 3:08 that given that it is a global company 3:10 so it's not like all of their employees 3:12 are in russia they do continue to 3:14 operate and do business in russia which 3:15 is another area of concern for people 3:18 because they feel supporting any company 3:20 that does business in russia is 3:22 tantamount to supporting the war in 3:24 ukraine but 3:25 when it comes to technicalities of 3:27 course there are certain risks which is 3:29 why i would recommend if you're involved 3:32 in anything serious like you work for 3:34 the government or you have some sort of 3:36 civil infrastructure data on your 3:37 computer that could be valuable in case 3:40 of cyber warfare maybe it is good to 3:43 switch away but at the same time 3:45 the decision would be a lot easier 3:49 if we had more high quality alternatives 3:52 to kaspersky and the truth is i mean at 3:54 the moment we don't like when i did my 3:56 antivirus tier list video kaspersky 3:59 wasn't a league of its own it's the only 4:00 product that was nested here and this is 4:02 backed up by 4:04 all of the uh tests that we've done 4:06 recently 4:07 and kaspersky does continue to perform 4:09 very well in these tests and 4:11 other products just need to catch up so 4:13 i really hope that in the future we will 4:15 see better performance from some of the 4:18 alternatives to kaspersky because at the 4:20 moment from a technical standpoint 4:21 kaspersky is clearly one of the best 4:24 products to use now i also think it's 4:26 worth mentioning that there are a lot of 4:28 people on reddit who think kaspersky is 4:30 a rootkit 4:32 but the reality is almost every av is a 4:35 rootkit in some sense because it has to 4:37 dig into the system has to install its 4:39 drivers in order to be able to intercept 4:41 the traffic to be able to scan it and 4:44 say whether or not it's safe 4:46 so yes kaspersky is technically 4:49 embedded within your system but that's 4:51 no different from any other antivirus or 4:54 security solution so it's important to 4:56 keep that in mind when talking about 4:58 these things 4:59 now if you are looking for alternatives 5:01 for whatever reason be it moral be it a 5:04 security concern you can take a look at 5:06 that antivirus tier list video and then 5:07 you can see some of the products that 5:09 are in tears below kaspersky and pick 5:11 one of the next ones 5:13 that's a good way to find an alternative 5:16 but am i running out and uninstalling 5:18 kaspersky from every system that i know 5:21 of 5:22 i'm not doing that yet i don't think 5:24 there's 5:24 enough evidence to suggest that 5:27 kaspersky is a major liability in that 5:29 way but things might change and this is 5:32 a very volatile situation so i'm as much 5:35 on edge when it comes to this choice as 5:37 you are i will continue testing 5:39 kaspersky products but at the same time 5:42 i'm not going to say that you're wrong 5:43 if you choose to move away that's your 5:46 decision but hopefully this video 5:47 provided some context and information 5:50 that might help you make that decision 5:52 of course if you want to discuss this 5:54 more feel free to join our discord link 5:56 in the description or just go to 5:58
